Anohni and the Johnsons
Born in the U.K. and raised in California, Anohni Hegarty became a fixture of the New York City nightclub scene in the 90s before cementing her legacy as an art pop legend. With a one-of-a-kind voice that carries echoes of Jimmy Scott, Scott Walker and Nina Simone, she made a name for herself with fragile pop music centering on queerness and social justice with the Johnsons, an ensemble she fronted since 2005's momentous I Am a Bird Now. In 2016, she released her debut solo album Hopelesness, a collaboration with Hudson Mohawke and Oneohtrix Point Never that reflected her growing frustration with humanity in its dark, experimental electronics. She then reunited with her band as Anohni and the Johnsons for 2024's My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross, built on American soul foundations with British folk and experimental music.
