„A practical guide to ecomancy for the digital age“ explores systems of narrative making by consulting both traditional magic ritual and scientific futures. Presented as three workshops / performances, Crawlers invites participants to invoke the powers of the nonhuman kin to equip themselves with the necessary tools for reconciling science and magic.
Portals are openings that allow transit between spaces; portals can be architectural (like doors or gates), they are magical (mushroom rings to fairyland, psychic gateways to the Astral plane, the rabbit hole of Alice in Wonderland), and they are digital (log-in pages, Wikipedia portals, virtual transportation).
In this workshop lecturers guide participants to employ object-oriented magic to synthesise physical portals, arranging materials of their choice to summon their chosen intention or manifestation.
Afterwards, participants are invited to document their portals and submit them to the centralised portal project, to digitally augment and charge these gateways of insight with the ability to transport users outside of their algorithmic bubble. By invoking chaos magic to find information that might guide people forward in the physical (and digital) world, the web page becomes a place for invocation of digital magic, a portal of portals, and a liminal space for contemplation of one’s intention.
Embrace the legacy of chaos magic and the internet’s history of randomness, self-governance, free information and anonymous networking in defiance of the dominant rational, user-tailored, monetised social media monopoly of our current internet experience.
