Paweł Szamburski

Composer and improviser born in 1980. One of the central figures of the Warsaw improvised and experimental music scene; together with Macio Moretti, he co-founded the key Polish indie label Lado ABC. As a musician, he most often makes use of the clarinet, voice and electronics; currently, he is active primarily with the Bastarda ensemble, which reinterprets early and medieval music, and the SzaZa duo (with guitarist Patryk Zakrocki). He has also played, among others, in Raphael Roginski's Cukunft, focusing on free jazz-tinged interpretations of Jewish music (especially klezmer), or the Ircha clarinet quartet (with Mikołaj Trzaska, Wacław Zimpel and Michał Górczyński); the list of his collaborators also includes such names as Joe McPhee, Kazuchisa Uchihashi, Burkhard Stangel, Tomasz Stańko or Hubert Zemler. He also creates music for film, silent cinema, theatre and contemporary dance.
