Pan American

Pan American is the solo project of Mark Nelson, a member of the band Labradford, one of the top performers on Chicago's Kranky label. The label also releases Pan-American records. The first of these, simply called Pan-American, was released in 1998, and featured music still reminiscent of the work of Nelson's parent band: calm, melancholic melodies were poured over a warm sound of guitars and simple electronics. The lively percussion, often augmented by dub effects, led to the whole of Mark Nelson's first album being described as "Labradford + rhythm". Pan-American's second album appeared in the shops in January 2000, was called 360 business/360 bypass and was a bold step towards a more electronic approach. Perhaps because of this, it is still considered Nelson's most interesting achievement today. Pan-American's third album appeared in April 2002. titled The river made no sound it is filled with more experimental, pure electronica, reminiscent of the work of artists such as Jan Jelinek, Pole and Rhythm and Sound. Pulsating, minimalist rhythms and snippets of melody make Mark Nelson's third album the most challenging. 2004 brought the album QUiet City regarded as the best disc in the project's discography. The last material Pan-American has released is the 2022 disc The Patience Fader.
