Devendra Banhart

With his gliding singing and gentle acoustic guitar strums, the American-Venezuelan singer-songwriter Devendra Banhart was the central figure of the early 2000s New Weird America scene, bringing a quirky, kaleidoscopic brand of folk to unlikely heights of mainstream attention. Drawing on Indian classical, Venezuelan and Brazilian pop music, as well as 1960s psychedelia and the work of Arthur Russell, Banhart debuted with a lo-fi collection titled The Charles C. Leary in 2002; after that, he began a three-album period of collaborations with Michael Gira of Swans, who released Banhart's work on his Young God label. He signed with XL Recordings for 2005's Cripple Crow and 2007's Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon; their more refined sound began a period of wide media attention for the musician, with headline spots at Coachella and Bonnaroo and collaborations with members of the Strokes, Beck and MPB legend Caetano Veloso. His catalog currently includes eleven albums; his latest is 2023's Flying Wig, recorded with the acclaimed Welsh musician and producer Cate Le Bon and leaning into synthpop.
