The Smile
Formed in 2021 by core members of the legendary group Radiohead – Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood – and London jazz drummer Tom Skinner (Sons of Kemet, Owiny Sigoma Band), The Smile play stripped-down, exploratory rock music with clearly audible echoes of its members' incredibly influential legacies. Their music continues Yorke's interest of afrobeat tropes, now anchored in Skinner's strikingly tight and precise approach to drumming, alongside Greenwood's distinctive guitar language, derived from post-minimalist composition; it frequently utilizes Radiohead staples, like references to early electronic music and post-punk, odd time signatures and paranoid lyricism, while avoiding the former group's trademark focus on melancholia in favour of a more casual songwriting style. The Smile's debut album, A Light for Attracting Attention, was released in 2022 on XL; the follow-up, Wall of Eyes, is due out in January 2024.
