Space Afrika
Space Afrika are a Manchester-based production duo who continue the British tradition of combining electronic rhythms with atmospheric soundscapes. However, there is decidedly more of the latter in their work - on their debut studio album Somewhere Decent to Live (2018), the rhythms are most of the time suggested by minimalist pulses in the vein of lowercase music, with hazy synths, bass and vocal samples reminiscent of Burial's later work. The duo's music is also similarly embedded in a socio-political context, featuring samples that build a portrait of Britain and the world in crisis. This narrative inclination was appreciated by the editors of Pitchfork, who included Space Afrika's mixtape Hybtwibt? in their 2020 list of the best ambient releases of the year.
