Petr Kalfus Sextet
The alto saxophone occupies a honorable place among jazz instruments since the days of the king of be-bop Charlie Parker, who helped the instrument finally get rid of the label “instrument for children“. Many alto specialists in the world follow in Parker´s footsteps, and one of the most promising talents is Petr Kalfus, who has been an established figure on the local jazz scene for some time. In his project Sextet, which first saw the light in 2011, he brought together excellent instrumentalists Jakub Doležal (tenor saxophone), Jan Jirucha (trombone), Jiři Neužil (piano), Petr Dvorský (bass) and Martin Kopřiva (drums).
The initial part of the sextet´s repertoire consists of a suite Sight to Sound penned by American saxophonist and composer Walt Weiskopf. This ten-part composition connects the worlds of visual art and music. The individual parts were dedicated eg. to Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso or Dalí and use a varied instrumental palette to render their famous works on the imaginary audio screen. Listen and try to feel the eneregy, colors, intense emotions, indomitable passion, brushstrokes, subtle shades, flashes of light and shadow play...
The remaining part of the repertoire of the sextet consists of original compositions of the individual band members and since Kalfus pampers a squad of excellent composers led by Jan Jirucha in his band, there is nothing to worry about. Quite the contrary - as much as the band leader and his teammates have already developed a very clearly profiled sound on their instruments, they are now working hard on their compositional expression. Judge for yourself after all.
