Morwan
Morwan is a post-punk band founded in Ukraine in 2019 by Kyiv-based musician Alex Ashtaui, originally as a solo project. In 2023, bassist Kaiin Pólina, also known as Woundedkind, joined Alex; the duo is now based in Berlin. Morwan's music is primarily dynamic and dark post-punk, often with elements of folk and ethno music. At the core of their music is always formidable drumming with rhythmic bass. Deep atmospheric synthesizers, cyclic guitar parts and piercing elements of folk instruments. All these elements are extremely rhythmic, but woven together to create a sense of chaotic primitive dance. Morwan has crafted a musical fusion that bridges the gap between ancient traditions and contemporary darkness, a testament to the enduring power of creativity and the boundless depths of human expression. Their music explores the rawer side of coldwave, focusing on propulsive rhythms, angular guitar work and unbridled vocals over moody atmospherics; an important point of reference is Arabic and Slavic folk music.
