Martinů Quartet
The Martinů Quartet, originally the Havlák Quartet, was founded in 1976 by students of the Prague Conservatory. It won seven laureate titles at major international quartet competitions, including ARD Munich, Evian, and the Prague Spring, which launched its international career. In 1985, it adopted the name Martinů Quartet to promote the works of Bohuslav Martinů. In 2004, the quartet won the MIDEM Award for Best CD of the Year in the 20th-century chamber music category for its recording of seven string quartets and other chamber works by Martinů. While its repertoire mainly focuses on the giants of Czech and world music, the quartet is also known for rediscovering forgotten works and premiering contemporary compositions. It received praise for its recording of Sylvie Bodorová's Terezín Ghetto Requiem and R. Stevenson’s works. The quartet has long been dedicated to performing and recording the complete string quartet cycle of Czech composer Tomáš Svoboda. In addition to its extensive concert activity worldwide, the Martinů Quartet collaborates closely with Czech Radio and has worked in the past with BBC, Radio France, ARD, and ORF.
