Jaroslav Valečka

Jaroslav Valečka uses the traditional artistic medium of oil painting on canvas or paper. He creates an idiosyncratic world of emotionally resonating stories set within a night-time, balladic landscape. He also paints figural compositions, including the spectrum of existential spiritual states of the individual confronted with everyday banality (Kuřák, Nevěsta). Valečka uses colour as his main expressive resource. He works on the basis of a definite form of depicted reality, which finally acquires a symbolic value within the context of the communication of an individual content, above all through the exaggeration of real colour, by which means the artist intensifies the emotive effects his paintings. Elements of the romantic tradition are also clear in his iconography. As well as motifs such as the shining moon (Moonlight), we also find the illuminated windows of homes shining in the dark (The Rectory), fire (Witches), shining stars (White Night), comets, forests at night, etc. The expressive colours and painterly condensation are reminiscent of the expressive symbolism of Edvard Munch. Valečka’s paintings charting the spiritual mood of the individual with his sensitively intensified forms of imaginary world are also highly expressive.
