Elliott Erwitt
Elliott Erwitt is an American advertising and documentary photographer known for his black and white images of ironic and absurd situations of everyday life in the style of the "decisive moment" master Henri Cartier-Bresson. At one time he served as president and vice president of Magnum Photos.
In 1939, in his ten years of Russian origin Erwittova family emigrated to the United States. Erwitt studied photography and film at the University of Los Angeles City College and the New School for Social Research, completed his education in 1950.
He was born on 26 July 1928 in Paris to Russian Jewish immigrant family. In 50th years, Erwitt served as a photographer's assistant in the United States Army deployed in operations in France and Germany. Erwitt was very influenced by meetings with prominent photographers such as Edward Steichen were, Robert Capa and Roy Stryker. Stryker, former director of the photography department of Farm Security Administration, hired Erwitt to the photographic project for the Standard Oil Company. Erwitt then launched a career as a freelance photographer, working for magazines such as Collier's, Look, Life and Holiday. Access to the Magnum Photos agency in 1953 allowed him to realize photographic projects around the world.
One of the many subjects in his amateur and professional career often fires are Dogs appeared thematically in four of his publications: Son of Bitch (1974) Dog Dogs (1998), Woof (2005) and Elliott Erwitt's Dogs (2008) .
He received a medal Centenary Medal of the Royal Photographic Society and in 2002 was awarded an Honorary Fellowship (HonFRPS) for his contribution to the art of photography.
