Karate
Karate is an American band formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1993 by Geoff Farina, Eamonn Vitt and Gavin McCarthy, joined by Jeff Goddard in 1995. The group broke up in 2005 and reunited in 2022.
Geoff Farina's meticulous guitar and his calm, civil voice. Jeff Goddard's jazzy bass and Gavin McCarthy's precise, austere drums. Fragile songs about crunching snow, the whirring of the fridge in a quiet apartment, eternal loss. Boston's Karate found an utterly distinctive sound soon after forming in 1993 – Farin's guitar predilection for prehistoric blues (and indeed his passion for anything musically old and woody) found an unexpected foothold in the post-punk aesthetic, resulting in seminal records like In Place of Real Insight (1997) and The Bed Is In The Ocean (1998).
Karate broke up after the album Pockets (2004), Geoff Farina embarked on a remarkable solo career (but also formed the underrated trio Glorytellers), Gavin McCarthy realized himself as a drummer in the Thalia Zedek Band and the noise trio E. Karate's comeback in 2022 resulted in a new album, Make It Fit (2024), which offers all the familiar ingredients but, somewhat surprisingly, leans in many places towards the rockier position that resonated in the band's very early days.
