John Francis Flynn
John Francis Flynn is an Irish singer and multi-instrumentalist whose work traverses the worlds of traditional and contemporary folk music. He is a founder member of the Traditional Irish folk band Skippers' Alley. His solo work combines traditional material with influences from the worlds of post-punk, electronica, improvisation and contemporary music.
He released his solo debut I Would Not Live Always in 2021, which was followed by his second album Look Over The Water, See The Sky. The second album is inspired by old stories and Irish folklore. Here he translates dark and surreal fantasies into eight compositions that deconstruct traditional songs in different ways. At one point Flynn slows the tempo, at another he adds breaths or combines acoustic sound with synthetic electronics. On the Irish musician's second recording, experimental folk becomes a toll for exploring emotions and meditating on the meaning of his own cultural heritage.
