Since 1986 the best young musicians from many countries of both western and eastern Europe have been joining forces in an orchestra bearing the name of a Czech native: the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, founded by the acclaimed conductor Claudio Abbado. Under its current chief conductor Ingo Metzmacher the ensemble will show its skills mainly in works by composers of the early twentieth century. The ‘icing on the cake’ will be a performance by a specialist in music of that period, the superb French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet.
