Elegant Baroque is swingin‘ it

Long-time members of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, solo flutist Mario Mesany and his brother Tadeáš on double bass, chose for this evening parts from two suites for flute and jazz trio by Claude Bolling. They invited their friends, pianist Jakub Dvořáček and percussionist Jan Linhart, to join them. Both musicians are very well known in the jazz world – Jakub for his mastery of the instrument and compositional achievements, Jan for his ability of refined improvisation and sensitive accompaniment. All the members of today's quartet have worked together for a long time, but this is the first time they have met over a study of Bolling's suites. Claude Bolling (1930-2020) was a child prodigy, playing in professional jazz ensembles from the age of 14. His collaborators included many well-known musicians such as J. P. Rampal, P. Zukerman, M. André, D. Ellington, Yo Yo Ma and O. Peterson. He wrote the music for the world-famous films Borsalino (1970), California Suite (1979) and others. Claude Bolling's music masterfully balances between classical and jazz. It is fresh, witty and, as we will see this evening, also very demanding in terms of interpretation.
