Der Theatermacher

To be blunt one must say that theatre in general is absurd, but to be blunt ... one can do nothing at all, at most one can kill oneself.... Well, since we haven't killed ourselves so far, we try to keep doing theatre. Even if it's all something completely absurd and hypocritical, says the actor Bruscon, the protagonist of Thomas Bernhard's Der Theatermacher. With his family, he arrives in a small town to give a performance at the local inn—but ends up being the show himself. The play by the author, regarded as one of the most outstanding European playwrights of the second half of the 20th century, is based primarily on the title role: in Andrzej Domalik's production, it is played by Jerzy Radziwiłowicz.
