Although Mozart was famous for his inexhaustible inventiveness and extraordinary speed in preparing new compositions, he, like other composers, occasionally drew on his older works to use them in new contexts. The cantata Davide Penitente represents a special type of such elaboration. In this case, Mozart did not so much take inspiration from a previously written passage as he literally copied the music from two previously completed Mass movements, adding an entirely new Italian text and supplementing them with two arias and a final cadenza. It should be emphasized, however, that the Viennese audience gathered for the work's premiere in 1785 at a charity concert organized by the Wiener Tonkünstler-Societät could not have known the mass prototype. The composition was very well received and was performed many times in the following years.

The situation is very different for today's audiences, since the Great Mass in C minor is one of the Viennese composer's best-known religious compositions. There is, therefore, an interesting opportunity to listen to the sound of the same musical tissue with different content by the composer himself in two different languages. During the event we will hear Mozart's Italian paraphrase of the biblical Psalms of David, which was written by the poet and musician Saverio Mattei in the mid-18th century. The musical introduction will be the solemn Kyrie KV 341 in D minor, once regarded as one of the first works Mozart wrote in Munich. Today the work is rather dated to the last years of the Master's life, and its solemn character induces a special kind of reverie.
