A stage paradocumentary based on Ryszard Kapuscinski's book The Emperor.

Ryszard Kapuscinski's book, published in 1978, is a fictionalized reportage about the court of Emperor Haile Selassie I, who ruled Ethiopia from 1930 to 1936 and 1941 to 1974. The courtiers' tales of fear, servility, denunciations, flattery and efforts to win imperial favour form a story about the backstage of corrupt power.

It is easy to find political contexts in this text concerning ideologies, systems or ruling parties. It would also be even easier to match the novel's protagonists with specific people from the world of politics, but this is not what the play's creators want the audience to focus on.

This is because The Emperor is ideal material for a story about a natural and at the same time flawed human trait–the need to impose one's will on others. To prove at all costs that something depends on us, that even the smallest decision is our decision. Wrocław's Capitol presents a performance about the desire for power, what humankind is capable of in order to gain it, and how they suffer when they cannot rule.
