Fake It Till You Make It

In April 2018 the curatorial collective insitu will present an exhibition titled "Fake it till you make it" at the internationally renowned center for contemporary art MeetFactory in Prague. For the first time, insitu collective will present an exhibition in Prague and introduce their unique curatorial perspective in a group show of five emerging international artists: Christian Falsnaes, Isabella Fürnkäs, Andy Kassier, Basim Magdy, Pia Sirén, Marianne Vlaschits, Anna Witt . After their successful participation at Aarhus 2017 – European Capital of Culture, this will be the second large-scale institutional exhibition for the Berlin-based curatorial team.

The exhibition "Fake it till you make it" focuses on the topic of so-called “self-help” books. The exhibition presents three chapters which focus on the core themes of those books: “Be a winner”, “Be religious about your workout” and “Take a deep breath”. It hardly comes as a surprise that in times of a complete persistence of communication due to constant accessibility and sounding through the (social) media, one can fall back on so-called self-help books.

With their works – partially commissioned – the artists respond to their own idea of what is helpful as experience or knowledge in order to increase well-being or a healthy position within society. On the one hand, the artworks reflect a shiny and glamorous vision of reality, and on the other, they reveal the behind-the-scenes of a number of these books and their pseudo-philosophies, at times dubious or even absurd. The exhibition will mirror existing trends in self-help books such as the introduction of rituals to your life, establishing forms of self-marketing and positive thinking, or ways of getting out of your comfort zone.
