Rahim is on a short furlough from prison, where he is serving a sentence for debt. He has just two days to convince his creditor to forgive him some of the money he owes. Apparently fate is in his favour, as a bag full of gold coins unexpectedly finds its way into his hands. By the time The Hero realises that the clanking package also contained temptations, unwanted fame and judgements served up by an anonymous mob, it will be too late to stop the spiral of dramatic events.

Asghar Farhadi, two-time Oscar winner (for A Separation and The Salesman) returns to his native Iran and—drawing on the local context—weaves another universal, poignant parable. This time about a man held hostage by the courts, including the most harshly judgmental tribunal that is social media. Following the titular Hero, Farhadi navigates the thin line between victim and criminal, success and failure, and good intentions and impure intentions with the flair and skill of a cinematic tightrope walker.
