Zeal & Ardor
Zeal & Ardor might be metal's most subversive act these days—but not for the usual reasons. As part of a tour promoting their acclaimed latest self-titled LP, they will visit Poland.
When biracial Basel musician Manuel Gagneux asked 4chan's music board what two styles of music to combine as an experiment, he predictably received the answers 'black metal' and 'ni**er music'; subverting the racist joke into a biting piece of social commentary, he started Zeal & Ardor, combining black metal with the Black slavery-era tradition of spirituals. The project debuted with 2016's Devil Is Fine, juxtaposing the horror of slavery, described in a Delta blues-inspired vocal style, with metal influences ranging from black to melodeath; the album was featured in several best-of-year lists. Zeal & Ardor have since released two more studio albums, played with the likes of Opeth, Mastodon, Deafheaven and Meshuggah, and performed at festivals including Montreux, Primavera, Lowlands and Reading.
