Bees, Wasps, Ants – A Collection Opens Up

With more than 30 million objects, the Museum für Naturkunde houses a unique collection that is of great importance for current and future research questions. The museum will develop this unique resource in the upcoming years, with the aim of making it accessible to users worldwide and we want our visitors to participate in this project live within the exhibition.

In a first pilot project, the complete collection of the Hymenoptera is currently being processed and digitally indexed within the exhibition. With about 2.3 million objects, it is one of the largest collections of the museum and includes bees, wasps, and ants. The collection includes valuable type specimens, already extinct species, and animals collected over a hundred years ago or across all continents. Especially with regard to the research on the currently observed bee and insect mortality, the collection is extremely important.

In the coming years, the collection will be restructured according to the latest scientific standards and equipped with a digital data set. The existing analog documentation is transferred to databases and supplemented by digital images in 2D and 3D. In addition, the animals are transferred to storage systems of highest conservation standards.

Google Arts & Culture provides virtual access to the Museum für Naturkunde, which can be explored through online exhibitions and 360 degree views.
