The Współczesny Theatre in Krakow presents a moving story about the magic of childhood, the power of dreams and the road to adulthood.

The plot of this stage interpretation of Ferenc Molnár's cult novel is based on a dispute over the title square. As the action unfolds, the spectator gets to know the adventures of a group of boys fighting on both sides of the barricade. He immerses himself with them in a world of childish games and fantasies, but also participates in their dilemmas and choices. The key theme of both the literary original and the theatrical adaptation is the character of Erna Nemeczka, a boy who, in defence of his own convictions, sacrifices what is most precious to him... his life.

Thus, the director creates an evocative vision of the world seen through the eyes of a child, in which not only fantasy and carefreeness reign, but also the flags of the adult world fly: betrayal, lies and death. Supplementing the reading text with contemporary commentary, it gives the audience a poignant history lesson, while emphasising positive values such as truth and courage. Stylish costumes and realistic set design (enriched with multimedia accents, movement, colour and light expressions) transport the audience to the streets of old Budapest, triggering their imagination.

Performance for children aged 10 and over.
