Saüc Ensemble

Hailing from Barcelona, Saüc Ensemble—helmed by Sergio González and Daïna Mateu—seeks to revive Renaissance music and traditional music of the Mediterranean. González plays the viola de roda, a type of hurdy-gurdy; he studied under some of the most eminent musicians, including Cretan lute master Kelly Thoma, who gave him the opportunity to develop a new language that combines Mediterranean phrases and ornamentation with a historical approach to medieval and Renaissance sources. Mateu is a specialist in early flutes. She has studied with some of the world's most respected performers, such as Marc Hantaï, Bartold Kuijken and Kate Clark, among others, gaining valuable insight into the technical and stylistic aspects of flute playing. Daïna has gained a wealth of knowledge and experience through studies at renowned European music institutions and universities, including Catalonia's Escola Superior de Musica and The Hague's Koninklijk Conservatorium; she has also played in various baroque ensembles and orchestras.
