Provincial Centre of Culture Animation
At the foot of the hill on which St Roch's Church towers over the town, in the municipal park in Bohaterów Monte Cassino Street, there are four pavilions whose shape is deceptively reminiscent of flying saucers. The round, small, bulky objects are connected to each other by concrete roofs, stairs and walkways. They have glazed conical roofs and facades covered with corrugated sheet metal. Their form was to resemble Podlasie haystacks. The Spodki have a rope construction, innovative for those times, which supports the entire roofs of individual buildings. The Białystok saucers were designed in 1973 by the Miastoprojekt Białystok Design and Research Office for the Central Harvest Festival taking place that year in the capital of Podlasie. Their author was Jerzy Toczydłowski, the construction was designed by Zdzisław Szymulski, and the interior was designed by the artist Lidia Śniatycka-Olszewska. The futuristic saucers were to show the modern face of Białystok. They were built at a record pace - in 4 months. Today it houses a restaurant and the Podlaski Cultural Institute.
