Parris Mitchell

DJ and producer Parris Mitchell, alternately known as Victor Romeo and Rhythm II Rhythm, is synonymous with the second wave of Chicago house. As a teenager, Mitchell cut his teeth on disco, before making house records inspired by hearing Ron Hardy at the Muzic Box and The Warehouse.

However, it was a meeting with Ray Barney from Chicago institution Barney’s Music that led to Mitchell's first release, and paved the way for what later became ghetto house. When Barney took over Dance Mania from Jesse Saunders, his x-rated vision and Mitchell's raw production style cemented Dance Mania's thumping and bumping blueprint.

In the late 80s, heavy percussive tracks from Lil' Louis, Hercules, and The House Master Boyz put a filthy spin on the club sounds coming out of Chicago, and laid the foundations for ghetto house to take the world by storm. Mitchell's upfront style was perfectly placed alongside the next wave of party-starters, which in the early 90s included DJ Funk, Paul Johnson, Traxmen and DJ Milton, and the Dance Mania family placed Chicago firmly in house history as the music's most important breeding ground.
