Museum Berggruen

The Berggruen Museum is situated in the district Charlottenburg at the West Stüler Building which is facing the Charlottenburg Castle. It hosts one of the most important collection of modern art classics in the whole world, which the collector and art dealer Heinz Berggruen gave to his native city in a "gesture of reconciliation“ for a very cheap price.

the museum, which is part of the National Gallery Berlin, shows more than 100 works of Picasso and more than 60 pictures by Paul Klee besides works of Georges Braque, Henri Matisse and Alberto Giacometti as well as examples of African sculptures.

Since the house opened its doors in 1996, Heinz Berggruen continuously kept buying artworks. 165 works in total were transferred to the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation in December 2000.

After Berggruen’s death in 2007 his family agreed on providing further artworks that Berggruen had bought to the museum as a loan and to continue to expand the collection through own purchases. With the expansion of the Berggruen Museum through the addition of the neighboring Kommandantenhaus and a new sculpture garden the necessary space for this was created. The extended museum was opened in March 2013.
