”From a sacrificial stubbornness to a stubborn sacrifice.”

The classic of a Czech literature, a national play interpreted many times. But where does the nation end and the play start?

Althought Marysa is a model example of a rural woman of the 19th century, she also represents a timeless principle of resistance. She is a victim of the mechanisms of the society, however, she is also the person who is willy-nilly responsible for creating and feeding them. She is a hero against her own will and a killer from the will of God. Is the murder of her villain husband a logical outcome of a hopeless situation or a moral appeal to the next generation? Is anything just black or just white?
