Fall Out Boy

Formed in 2001 as a casual side project of musicians associated with the Chicago hardcore scene—lead lyricist Pete Wentz, lead songwriter Patrick Stump and guitarist Joe Trohman—Fall Out Boy became an underground phenomenon after the release of their first album Take This to Your Grave (2003).

Two years later, after the release of their sophomore effort From Under the Cork Tree, they were already one of the key bands in the mainstream pop punk explosion: each of their singles was catchier than the last and debuted at the top of the charts, they earned Grammy nominations and won VMAs, and Wentz became an object of fascination for teenage girls and tabloids, with his name growing to be synonymous with 'sellout' among rock purists. In 2007, Fall Out Boy released their most pop-oriented album so far, Infinity on High, continuing a seemingly endless streak. Two years later—at the height of their fame—Folie à Deux was released; this maximalist, ambitious project failed to repeat the preceding commercial successes and alienated the band's fans. Under the pressure of expectations and constant touring, Fall Out Boy went on hiatus. During their final show, Mark Hoppus of Blink-182 shaved Wentz's head in a symbolic act of cleansing.

Fall Out Boy returned to the stage in 2013 with Save Rock and Roll: now more laid-back, sonically adventurous and unabashedly poptimistic, collaborating with artists from Elton John to Courtney Love and Big Sean. They have since released two more studio albums, with the latest, So Much (for) Stardust, due out in March 2023.
