Black Country, New Road

British collective Black Country, New Road emerged at the end of the last decade surfing the post-Brexit new wave, as the influx of innovative rock bands from the British Isles that also included groups such as Black Midi, Squid, Shame and Dry Cleaning was occasionally dubbed. BCNR's music, however, veered into much less direct territory than that of their young-and-angry peers—with long-form composition, a preference for poetics over virtuosity and their seven-piece line-up, they were more of an obsessively thought-out post-rock project. In 2021, they debuted with the Ninja Tune-released album For the First Time, which earned them widespread acclaim and a Mercury Prize nomination; 2022 saw the release of their second and currently newest LP, Ants from Up There, shaking off the last crumbs of post-punk gloom in favour of intricately woven chamber pop inspired by Sufjan Stevens and Steve Reich. Ants from Up There was met with virtually unanimous critical acclaim and became a fixture in the exploratory rock canon quickly upon its release. Moments after the album's release, lead singer Isaac Wood left the band; BCNR currently continues as a sextet.
