The Polish Royal Opera's online concert with compositions by Nicola Porpora and Johann Adolf Hasse.

Nicola Porpora (1686-1768) and Johann Adolf Hasse (1699-1783) - two outstanding composers of the late Baroque, whose fates first intertwined in Naples, one of the most important musical centres of the period. Hasse arrives there in 1724 to polish his talent and does so, among other things, under Porpora's tutelage. Ultimately, both composers occupy an important place in the history of the development of the opera genre, for a time even joining their creative forces when they competed with Handel himself in London.

Porpora's purely instrumental works, of which he had more than a dozen in his artistic output, enjoyed considerable recognition during his lifetime. This is attested to by the fact that his chamber Sinfonias, first published in London in 1736 (including his Sinfonia in C major, Op. 2 No. 2), were soon followed by further editions, in London in 1753 and in Paris in 1760. The second part of the concert will feature Hasse's L'Amor prigioniero from 1761, a charming cantata written to a text by the famous librettist Pietro Metastasio. Here, Amor, who has been tricked into imprisonment by the henchmen of the goddess of the hunt, enters into dialogue with Diana and points to his many merits. Despite her caution and well-founded accusations, the goddess finally has to admit that Cupid is right. For who can resist love?

Programme:

  • Nicola Porpora: Sinfonia in C major Op. 2 No. 2
  • Johann Adolf Hasse: L'Amor prigioniero.

*The event will be available on the YouTube channel of the Polish Royal Opera until 23 May 2021.
