Jerzy Maksymiuk

Jerzy Maksymiuk is a Grodno-born Polish conductor, composer and pianist. Maksymiuk has always promoted contemporary music. He is one of the founders of the Polish Society for Contemporary Music. Among others, he took part in the Warsaw Autumn Festival (two "Orpheus" awards), and premiered about 200 contemporary works in various countries. He has recorded about 100 albums, e.g. for EMI (13 albums), Hyperion, Naxos. Many have been honoured with prestigious awards. These include the Wiener Floeten Uhr for his interpretations of Mozart with POK (1982), the Gramophone Award for Best Concerto of the Year (1992) with James Macmillan's recording of The Confession of Isobel Gowdie, in 1995 the Hyperion Award for Medtner's piano concertos (soloist Nikolai Demidenko). In Poland, his recordings have repeatedly won the 'Fryderyk', including for his album Karłowicz (BeArTon), recorded with Sinfonia Varsovia and Agata Szymczewska. Earlier, the same prize was won by BeArTon's album Witold Lutosławski (Sinfonia Varsovia, Janusz Olejniczak, Olga Pasiecznik), and as many as two Fryderyks were awarded in two categories for an album of music by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki with the same orchestra, Adam Kruszewski and the choirs of PR and Schola Cantorum Gedanensis (2003).

Maksymiuk is also a composer (symphonic music, chamber compositions, ballet, songs, film music). Of these old compositions, he himself values most Expront (1980), and of film music, the one written for Sanatorium pod klepsydrą directed by Wojciech Has. Recent years, in which he has been composing a lot, have included the following works: A lonely Star over Be'er - Sheva (2010) - a piece for quintet, Vivaldi in Boston for string orchestra and string quartet (2010), Leaves Wheregdzie Spadające for chamber orchestra with piano (2011), Lament of the Heart, Kielcom in memoriam for orchestra, clarinet and soprano (2012) . The music (85 minutes) written for the silent film Mania starring Pola Negri was performed live in 2012 with presentations of the film in London, Madrid, Paris, Kiev, Berlin and Warsaw.

The maestro has many distinctions, including the Commander's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and the 'Gloria Artis' Gold Medal. The Polish Radio honoured him with the Brilliant Baton. He also boasts a SuperViktor. He is an Honorary Citizen of the City of Białystok.
