A theatrical adaptation of Ryszard Kapuściński's famous book. The Emperor is a multi-voiced story about the Ethiopian ruler Haile Selassie I and his court entourage. In the late 1970s, The Emperor was compulsory reading in Poland. Readers easily found the totalitarian 'red court' of the Communist Party Central Committee in the court of the Ethiopian monarch. But The Emperor, by subjecting the court mechanisms to analysis, for it is they that make the Ethiopian dictator into an all-powerful ruler, contains a universal message. Kapuściński masterfully juggles different literary styles, from reportage to baroque ornamentation, which brings the subject even closer to the present day. Just as timeless are the human ambitions, impotence, fear, but also wickedness, duplicity and meanness portrayed in The Emperor.
